About dry needling

What it is

Dry needling uses a fine needle inserted into specific points in muscle tissue. It is often used to address muscle tension, pain sensitivity, and movement restriction when clinically indicated following assessment.

When it may be used

Dry needling may be considered when muscle based pain or tension is contributing to symptoms, or when symptom sensitivity is preventing progress with movement based rehabilitation.

What to expect

We will explain the rationale, the sensations you may feel, and aftercare steps. Your comfort and consent remain central, and dry needling is only ever used as one part of a complete rehabilitation plan.

FAQ

Common questions

Is dry needling the same as acupuncture?
No. While both use thin needles, dry needling is based on Western anatomy and neuromuscular principles. It targets specific muscle tissue and is used in the context of a physiotherapy assessment, not traditional Chinese medicine.
Does it hurt?
Most people feel little to no pain during needle insertion. You may feel a brief local twitch response in the muscle — this is normal and often a sign the technique is working. Some local aching or heaviness during the session is common. We will always check in with you throughout.
Are there side effects?
Temporary soreness, bruising, or minor bleeding at the needle site can occur. Fatigue or a brief increase in symptoms for up to 48 hours is also possible. Serious side effects are rare when performed by a trained practitioner. We will discuss all of this before proceeding.
Do I need to rest afterwards?
Not necessarily. We will provide specific aftercare advice based on your treatment. Gentle activity is generally fine, but we may recommend avoiding heavy loading or intense exercise in the treated area for a short period. Clear guidance is part of every session.
